Bring in your current drivers license along with a second piece of Government issued identification. If you do not have your driver’s license you will need 2 pieces of Government issued identification to provide proof of who you are.

Acceptable Proof of Identity

Proof of identity can be done by providing the following:

Photo documents must contain your legal name and date of birth. Some examples of primary photo identification are:

  • Alberta operator’s licence or identification card
  • Photo driver’s licence (from another jurisdiction)
  • Valid Canadian Passport
  • NEXUS Card
  • Canadian Armed Forces Identification Card
  • Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) Card (Federally issued)
  • Municipal, Provincial or Federal Police Force Identification
  • Valid foreign Passport with appropriate Immigration documents
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Métis Nations of Alberta Card

Non photo documents must contain your legal name and date of birth. Some examples of primary non photo identification are:

  • Birth Certificate (original)
  • Work Visa, Student Visa, Permanent Resident Card

You will be provided an interim license which is valid for 30 days. The new license will be mailed to you within 7-10 working days. If you have not received your license after 21 business days please call the number on the interim license.

Note that the interim license may not be used as identification.

If you are going away or planning a holiday where you require photo identification you can renew your license early. You can renew your license up to 6 months in advance!

Government Photo ID

ID cards are clearly marked for identification purposes only and do not entitle the person to operate a motor vehicle under any circumstance. Government-issued ID cards are for Alberta residents who do not or cannot hold a valid Alberta operator’s licence. ID cards can not be issued to anyone in possession of a valid drivers licence from Alberta, another province or state, or another country.

Learner’s License/Graduated Drivers’s Licensing

The Graduated Drivers Licensing system is a three stage program that must be completed to become a fully licensed driver.

To obtain the learners licence (class 7) you must:

  • Be 14 years of age or older
  • Pass a vision screening test in our office
  • Pass a written knowledge test on the rules of the road in our office
  • Have parent consent if you are under the age of 18
  • Conditions of the Learners Licence:
  • Must hold a Learners licence (class 7) for at least 1 year
  • Must be accompanied by a fully licenced (non-probationary) driver who is 18 years of   age or older who is seated next to the driver
  • Not permitted to drive between midnight and 5am
  • No more passengers than seatbelts
  • Will be suspended at 8 or more demerit points
  • Have a zero alcohol level at all times

To obtain a probationary licence (Class 5) you must:

  • Hold a Learner’s (Class 7) Licence
  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Pass the standard Alberta Road Test.  Road tests are taken at our office by appointment only. We do not book appointments over the phone.  You must come in and purchase the booking of your exam.

Conditions of the Probationary Driver:

  • Must spend a minimum of 2 years as a probationary driver
  • No more passengers than seatbelts
  • Will be suspended with 8 or more demerits
  • Have a zero alcohol level at all times
  • May not upgrade to a commercial licence
  • Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a learner

To become a fully licenced driver you must:

  • Have been suspension free for the last year of your 2 year probationary stage
  • Pass the Alberta Advanced Road Test. This road test can be done through our office, call to set up an appointment.

Fine Payment

McKillop Registry can process any type of fine through our registry office except current parking tickets

We charge $9.00 administration fee on each ticket processed.

Current Fines
If your fine is not past the court date you can pay it in our office. When paying your fine you must present one of the following:

Original copy of ticket
A current Notice of Conviction
An offence notice which will say “Part 3″ in the lower right hand corner

Overdue Fines
If your fine is past the court date you may pay the fine in our office with no other documents required provided the ticket is now on our system. Fines that are past the due date must be paid in full to proceed with any other vehicle or drivers licence services.

Road Exams/Testing

We offer all knowledge testing including air break knowledge test, and safety fitness. All of our road testing is done through Certified Driver Testing and is done on site. We have a strict parameter of rules for attempting a road test.

  • To be able to do the class 5 basic exam you must meet the following conditions:
  • You must have a class 7 licence for at least one year
  • You must be suspension free for one year
  • You must be at least 16 years of age or older
  • **Some exceptions may apply.

The person taking the exam must come into the office to book the test. We will require the drivers licence of the person taking the test.

Once you have completed the class 5 basic exam we will change your class 7 learners to a class 5 licence.  You will be provided an interim license which is valid for 30 days.  The new class 5 license will be mailed to you within 7-10 working days.  If you have not received your license after 21 business days please call the number on the interim license.

Note that the interim license may not be used as identification.

The class 5 advanced exam is offered for drivers of two different categories. Please choose the category that is appropriate for you.

New Driver to Canada:

Once you have completed the learners exam guidelines, you may be eligible for the advanced road test. To be able to do the class 5 basic exam you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must have at least two years driving experience in your home country
  • The government has approved your home country drivers licence
  • You must have a class 7 licence in your possession
  • **Some exceptions may apply

The person taking the exam must come into the office to book the test. We will require the drivers licence of the person taking the test.

Once you have completed the class 5 advanced exam we will change your class 7 learners to a class 5 licence.  You will be provided an interim license which is valid for 30 days.  The new class 5 license will be mailed to you within 7-10 working days.  If you have not received your license after 21 business days please call the number on the interim license.

Note that the interim license may not be used as identification.

*If you decide to do the basic exam instead of the advanced, you will be required to do the advanced as well, in order to get out of the GDL program. We do not suggest this as an option.

Current Holder of a Class 5 Graduated Drivers Licence (GDL):

Once you have completed the first stage of the Class 5 Graduated Drivers Licence you may be eligible for the advanced road test. To be able to do the class 5 Advanced exam you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must have held your class 5 GDL licence for at least 2 years
  • You must be suspension free for the last year of your GDL program

Once you have completed the class 5 advanced road test we will change your class 5 Graduated Drivers Licence to a Class 5.  You will be provided an interim license which is valid for 30 days.  The new class 5 license will be mailed to you within 7-10 working days.  If you have not received your license after 21 business days please call the number on the interim license.

Note that the interim license may not be used as identification.

In order to obtain a motorcycle licence you must complete a class 6 knowledge test and a road exam. When you are ready to take the class 6 road exam you must meet the following conditions:

  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Hold Class 7 licence (at minium)
  • Pass a written knowledge test on the rules of the road in our office

Note: You do not require an appointment to write the knowledge test.  You do need to set up an appointment for the road test in our office.

In order to obtain a Class 4 licence you must complete a Class 4 knowledge test and road exam. When you are ready to take the Class 4 road exam you must meet the following conditions:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Hold at minimum class 5 (non-GDL) drivers licence
  • Pass the Class 4 knowledge test
  • Pass vision screening
  • Submit a satisfactory medical exam

Once you have completed the Class 4 road test we will change your class 5 Licence to a Class 4.  You will be provided an interim license which is valid for 30 days.  The new class 4 license will be mailed to you within 7-10 working days.  If you have not received your license after 21 business days please call the number on the interim license.

Note that the interim license may not be used as identification.

In order to obtain a Class 3 licence you must complete a Class 3 knowledge test and road exam. When you are ready to take the Class 3 road exam you must meet the following conditions:

  • Be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Hold at minimum a class 5 (non-GDL) drivers licence
  • Pass the Class 3 knowledge exam
  • Pass a vision screening

Important:  If vehicle used in testing is equipped with air brakes you must have the air brake endorsement on your license (Q).  We provide air brake testing in our office if required.

Once you have completed the Class 3 road test we will change your class 5 Licence to a Class 3.  You will be provided an interim license which is valid for 30 days.  The new Class 3 license will be mailed to you within 7-10 working days.  If you have not received your license after 21 business days please call the number on the interim license.

Note that the interim license may not be used as identification.

In order to obtain a Class 2 licence you must complete a Class 2 knowledge test and road exam. When you are ready to take the Class 2 road exam you must meet the following conditions:

  • The MELT (Mandatory Entry Level Training) program is a requirement before the road test
  • Be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Hold at minimum a class 5 (non-GDL) drivers licence
  • Pass the class 2 knowledge exam
  • Pass a vision screening
  • Submit a satisfactory medical

Important:  If vehicle used in testing is equipped with air brakes you must have the air brake endorsement on your license (Q).  We provide air brake testing in our office if required.

  • Pass the Class 1 knowledge exam

  • Provide proof of airbrake endorsement . We provide air brake testing in our office if required.

Once you have completed the Class 1 road test we will change your Licence to a Class 1.  You will be provided an interim license which is valid for 30 days.  The new Class 1 license will be mailed to you within 7-10 working days.  If you have not received your license after 21 business days please call the number on the interim license.

If you have received a letter from Alberta Transportation or a notice from your doctor stating that you are required to undergo road testing contact our office.  The Notice to Report will indicate the type of testing required.

You will need your drivers licence and paperwork stating that you have been requested to do testing.

The first road test is free of charge. If you do not pass the exam you will need to purchase any future road tests. We suggest you bring another person to the registry with you for your test. If you do not pass  your licence will be down graded to a learners licence. The learners licence does not allow you to drive on your own. You must have another Class 5 licensed driver to accompany you.
